Writing Groups

Finding time to write while working or going to school can be difficult, but it is necessary if you want to be a writer. Setting a schedule or a routine always helps me sit down to write.

Something that I’ve been trying out recently are creating writing groups. For the most part, I send out an interactive calendar to my friends and try to find a common two to three hours that we can write. Most of these happen on Discord, which I like for organizing scripts and feedback, and using their voice channels to do online meetings. Occasionally, I’ll have some at home, we’ll all take a spot at a table, eat some snacks, and ask for feedback if needed.

I think that making these writing groups with friends are incredibly helpful to maintain a constant stream of writing, even if it means only devoting a block of time for writing 1-2 times a week – Even that is better than nothing!

When I was in LA for a summer, I ended up using BumbleBFF to find a group of writers where I met two great friends and writers. Even now that two of us aren’t living in LA, we still find time to send scripts and give feedback to each other.

Finding writers online has become so much easier! If you see someone on Instagram or Bluesky (or a blog!) that aims to be a writer or just has similar goals to you, reach out and see if they’d be interested in reading a script or try to form a mini writing group with a bunch of people. The worst they can say is no!

Writing is so often seen as an introverted task, which, yes, I find the appeal in often. But finding a community, even if its one or two more people, can be so helpful to keep you on track.
